Our client came to us with 2 musts

1. She loved this bed in our showroom

2. She had purchased her nightstands already

Now, I must tell you, the nightstands in no way suited my vision for her space, but I believe a client must always have what they like. I was confident my interpretation of what she wanted, and what she had purchased could be united.

Silk Drapes, Grass Cloth...all the lovely things

So, the nightstands we quite arts and crafts, now, how to unite that with the elegance I felt the client would love???...

The Perfect Unifying Fabric

Enter the perfect Art Nuevo inspired fabric.

This fabric had enough historic elements to unify the nightstands to the rest of the space, the simple elegance I wanted for the space, and it combined all the colors I wanted to use. The rest was a breeze!

Our client did have a couple of space challenges, the classic one we all encounter in an old house is lack of closets and this home was no different. We decided to replicate the one existing closet on the right with a matching closet to the left.

The new build out gave us the opportunity to create a retreat perfect for busy parents. We incorporated bookshelves into the new wall and added the stunning wall sconces to create a beautiful reading nook

Boardwalk Empire has become a bit of an addiction in my house, and yes the plot is great, Jimmy is cute yadda yadda...but please...

CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE INTERIORS??

I mean, so inspiring...and I am a girl who loves her millwork...did I mention I have detailed paneling in my house....on ceilings!

you see where I am going here :)

Well it all makes me wonder what happened,where did all this lovely detailing go? I'm doing my best to bring it back...on my aforementioned ceilings..as well as in a soon to be completed project in Calgary...so wish me luck..or better yet...panel something :)

Oh and lets not forget color...yummy turquoise everywhere :)

Again, lovely shade of turquoise paired with olive...one of my fave combos...and those windows above the doors...dying to do that in a project!

And I must mention this fabulous room of Nucky's, not only do I LOVE a man who can embrace a heavily draped window...but pairing it with a chair MADE to be enjoyed with a glass of scotch...style indeed!

Everyday Histories

I set myself to making eggs this morning.

Which I always make using a sweet little bowl picked up at a long ago but unforgotten garage sale.

(why do I remember??)

This sweet little bowl (center bowl in the above photo) is the prefect shape for whisking eggs.

It's ceramic is crackled with age.

One thing is obvious with this bowl, it was created for this purpose, and to perform this purpose for a lifetime longer than my own.

It has a subtle rim, which the fingertips tuck into gently, so one can achieve the perfect tilt.

I can imagine the mold for this bowl, created thoughtfully, in a time when bowls were a mainstay of everyday life, when a homes daily bread came regularly from a well used bowl much like my own.

But why do I care? why did I surround myself with these everyday histories?

Here is a ladder pulled from a dumpster...many moons ago..on a hot summer day.

This ladder is always found in my living room, pressed into service as a blanket rack in winter and a magazine rack in summer.

It seams wrong to have it simply as decor,

a item picked up to imbue interest.

It is intended to be a labourer, or to service a labourer of some kind.

True it is broken, and no good as a ladder.

(yes I tried, one day when I was to lazy to pull the real ladder from the basement)

It has paint on it...whose paint?

Was it a questionable landlord applying the obligatory fresh coat of white?

Or an new father applying a coat sky blue for his new son?

Did you see my tweets last week?

Here is the antique lantern I recently acquired at an antique store.I thought it would be more than I could afford, only to find it was shockingly less.

Was this due to it's state of disrepair?

Certainly the silk is rotten in spots, the paint faded...from it's use at an event (or events) perhaps..

can you see dancing,frivolity and glee it it's used state?

Perhaps the shopkeeper could not see its honest history, only it's lack of perfection, providence (and pretension)?

Mirror back side plates, wall decor now, vessels for tiny treats at most any event I host.

The silver backing was scratched when I purchased them,

from another hostess's events,

to which I add my own with every use...

a subtle memoir of parties past..

A tin ceiling tile.

Is it because I have always dreamed of my own shop that these common decor elements appeal to me?

A wall mounted SCOTTIES tissue holder.

Where was it placed that the brand was so proudly displayed?

It has always felt commercial to me...perhaps a hospital??

It was certainly scrubbed at some point in its life, by someone who felt it's existence was a matter of duty rather than ascetics judging by the scuffs left behind...

who used the Scotties?...

tears of joy I hope...

One of the many items in my home more precious to me than it should be.

A soup tureen purchased for a dollar at a rummage sale, as with all of my everyday histories, it services me in some way on a daily basis.

The handle is cracked,broken and repaired. It was in this state before it's purchase by me.

I still distinctly remember the woman beside me commenting on the perceived damage,

a flaw,not worth purchasing.

But how did it break?

Perhaps when jostled amongst the other dishes in the Christmas evening sink?

and who repaired it?

perhaps a loving husband...later that night in the basement?

Was it a thoughtless gift to his wife to repair something she treasured?

and if so, does this act not make my tureen worth more than a dollar?

not less?

(I know the ceramic Pho Dog CD repaired for me years ago has more value to me than it's undamaged twin)

And so I return to my bowls,

this is my great-grandmother Pauline's potato bowl.

One of two I own whose story I do know some of.

(the other is the common brown bowl at the left in the first image)

I did not know her, my great-granmother,though I new her husband briefly and have admired him greatly.

My own mother ate potatoes from this bowl every night. Did she cause this chip in the side?

her father, his father or perhaps Pauline herself?

I treasure it in a way I believe she would appreciate.

It is used most nights for some part of dinner,

even though it's clay was designed for the kitchen sink rather than this dishwasher, and it's use requires the further commitment of hand washing afterwards...

am I closer to my own mother this way..carrying out a task which was surely her nightly chore...

I believe I am ...

A Visit to Black Rock

A couple weeks back CD and I took a lovely little long weekend to Ucluelet

but before you think I was neseled in this amazing hotel for 3 days wait...

I did not even know it existed!

We purchased a weekend getaway at a silent auction, otherwise I am sure we never would have made the trip to the western edge of Vancover Island.

After puttering around the required sites (Tonfino, Longbeach) we began seeking a nice place to relax with a drink.

Black Rock was spotted on a "adventure" to the other side of Uculet.

Once spotted we knew we HAD to experiance what was sure to be an amazing space.

The lobby is breathtaking, 2 storey floor to ceiling windows open up to the expansive pacific ocean beyond.

This "felled wood" bench is one of the many subtle and artisic refences to the location.

Another View of the Lobby, these chair are exceptional.

They sit opposite the most amazing light fixture designed to give one the impression of looking up from the ocean floor through seaweed.

Sorry, worst pic ever!

Love how a simple piece of driftwood is used to accent the entry to Black Rocks spa.

The entrace to Fetch, Black Rocks own restaurant.

CD and I ended up staying for dinner and were happy we did! The meal was exceptional.

Again I MUST comment on the lights. I find this fixture reminiscent of sea anemones, so organic and beautiful.

Butterflies in the Ro-Do

Sadly the season has passed for my little pond-side Rhododendron to bloom...

but the butterflies have arrived!

Well in fact, I finally had the insperation to find a use for my butterfly mobile from Roost

(Not my image..sorry did not note source, Bad!)

While it looks lovely in the image above, mine did not stand up to my often open window and became a tangled mess!

But they are just to pretty to trash!!

What was a girl to do??

Why decorate her Ro-Do of course!!

They are so sweet and delicate tied to the branches.

This is the last of this seasons blooms..wish I had this idea earlier!

Love the way they flutter around my Buddha,

The wind tosses them about, which adds a very life like quality to the installation.

Perched amongst the spent flowers..the subtle,elegant butterflies add a sophisticated dash of whimsey...

Can whimsey be sophisticated???

So while enjoying my guilty pleasure I was overjoyed to discover the work of Kathe Frage (via the lovely @layersandlayers)..which lead to immediate blog inspiration
which is work...
right?....

About the Artist

The painting above is one of many in Kathe Frage's French Wallpaper Series. The collection is meant to recall the aged fresco's found in Parisian abodes. Kathe's inspirations, Kimonos,Laquered furnishings and Chinoiserie, are very evident in the pieces. Geometric color blocking gives the pieces a modern edge. A room created with French Kimono's in mind....

Well it was somewhat difficult to select a painting to create a room around but those sweet little birds did me in!

The furnishings, as always for me, had to be elegant and simple.

The delicate sofa (via Bespoke), would be covered in the statement making blue wide-wale velvet cord, simple toss cushions in a paler stripe to relax the eye before the stunner of a orange/red graphic stripe.
Chairs are the pillars of a space, they should exude personality yet not overwhelm the space.The 2 chairs selected for this space are go to chairs in my world.

The first (show wood frame) is the stunning COCO chair (via Bespoke)
This I would upholster in the elegant creme silk swirl, which allows the frame to take center stage. A pair opposite the sofa? Toss cushion to subtlety echo the artists color blocking?...I think that will do quite nicely...
The final chair would be a "ladies" chair, tucked in a corner beside the fabulous mirror fronted cabinet, upholstered in pale pink...yes a glass of white would be lovely, thank you ever so much.....

For a bit of spunk...well one must turn to Shine Everyday. End tables that will be noticed and a side cabinet which commands attention...coming together nicely.

But no, we have not been overwhelmed with color, white walls will calm the space, and allow the colors to breathe, high gloss gray trim to bring in a flavor the Paris,
much like the artwork
and a stunning paper in a adjacent room...glimpsed only...

all quite lovely don't you agree?

A Bathroom on a budget???....

When one of our favorite boutique customers called to discuss the "worst bathroom in the world" we knew we had to help!

I can't find the before pics...but picture hunter green cultured marble sinks....and counter top....and tub....and shower walls....and....wait for it..... WINDOW JAMBS!!!

yuck.....

Our client had a tight budget of only $9k.....which we went over...but the outcome is stunning and I am sure she is loving it!!

Here is a little bit about what we did...with lots of pictures....

Double vanities, of course... Can you spot the budget saver..o.k. the mirrors are a dead giveaway..homedepot $99. The 2 Pedestals sinks were one of the largest savings of the project! Saved thousands over a custom vanity with marble top. The glass etegere is used for storage of everyday items. Pretty baskets are used for unsightly items, and are easy to pull out when those items are needed.

How sweet are the his and hers plates above the mirrors???
My favorite bit!

A sweet little claw foot tub, we hoped for bigger, but could not miss this floor model special...after all, most of our budget went into the stunning marble floor!
A must have chandelier over the tub and matching images of Paris anchor this stunning vignette.

Well we all know my paneling tricks by now....and here you go again...

The client's husband was barely handy so we invented this simple paneling design for the wainscoting...as always...stock 1x2's and a little Dap go a long way!! Also a great clean up solution as paneling is traditionally painted with a higher gloss paint...

2 budget saver's in one picture...not to mention a stylish solution to the lack of storage...

We paired the stunning marble basket weave...a classic...with inexpensive ceramic. Black 12 x 8's were used to create a dramatic border, 3x6's in the shower, with a sweet marble inlay for interest.

The shower was designed to receive a stock glass enclosure...the metal frame is a small sacrifice for the cost savings...

All the storage lost in our vanity is found again in the great "pantry" cabinet. A little outside of the box thinking and we were able to find a great piece to add "furniture" feel to the space

Hope you like it as much as our clients! I am pleased we were able to combine stylish storage with cost saving items to get a stunning bathroom with a small(ish) price tag...

Part 2...getting there...& done!

Wow...looking at those pictures gave me chills..and not in a good way! What were we thinking!

This is much better...

New tile in the bathroom...simple layout with a few nicer tiles thrown in...I was obviously inspired by Sarah R. and her stripes here..but also wanted to do something different that one 3-4 tile wide border (yawn..) but had to be easy to install...remember...we are the tile setters....ish....

Yep, another picture of the saw....mascuarading as window trim picture.....but I must say if you are looking for cost saving window/door casing this is the best trick! Have Home Depot (or another building center) cut 4x8 sheets of MDF into strips whatever height you want...the mouldings here cost us $.41 compared to $1.25!

Love the little vanity I picked up at a local shop...coat of paint and new hardware....wish I had a better picture of the final bathroom...it is my fav...i think...We got the marble tile for $2/ sq foot at Rona...and 1 hour of time to sort through the boxes and pick out the horrible pink ones...but time well spent!!! I should mention that if you want Rona to let to pick through all the boxes...be kind and rebox what you don't take...I am sure if we were not being so thoughtful and careful we would have been told to stop....thanks Rona!!

A quickly dressed up railing...we replaced the spindels to give a slightly cleaner look and love the 2 paint colors!!

First day with a fridge (that wasn't a biohazard!) proper storage for our reno supplies...

Summer!!! Reno lunches on the deck...so pretty!!

Cabinet Boxes....flooring...lighting....we are getting close!!!

Lovley little eating bar....the cabinet on the right now has a sheet of glass for a desktop and the wall is covered with cork tiles..perfect little desk area!

I WANT THIS KITCHEN....oh well hopefully my house is next...

Very happy with how the stairs turned out! The dark carpet is a great accent!

Walk in closet....pretty sure this is what sold the place...

Panelled wall in the master bedroom...love this feature and can't wait to see what the new owner does with it!

So in the end it is hard to believe it is the same place. After much struggling to balance the need to turn a profit with wanting to do my best work (as always) I am very happy with the outcome. The best part of the whole story is that the newest member of my design team bought the condo!!! lucky girl!! and lucky me..she has a great eye and I cannot wait to see what she adds to this place. A hint, we will be paneling and papering the doors...I think..it is all up to her now...

Hopefully will will see her finished product here soon!!

Sorry it has been a while.....

But I have been a busy girl!!!

So I had planned to document the flip as it went along...you know, inside view of a reno and all that....looking back I think now I did give the inside view....I HAD NO TIME....it was crazy...
A little catch up...
We purchased this terrible little condo and took possession on March 5th...yep little over 2 months ago. We wanted to see if redeveloping abandoned/abused real estate was profitable..it is...and viable as a career for my husband..will be...
BUT
in order to finance it we had to continue our full time jobs, and as you all know I own a shop/design firm...which means I already have a 50hr/wk job!
We worked every evening..usually arriving at 6pm and leaving around 9, and every weekend (9am-7pm) to get this done. We had to do all the work ourselves to save on labor, except electrical and plumbing which needs specific permits.
So here you go the step by step images I meant to blog about durning the process....but I was just TOO tired!

The before pics..what is there to say really...other than Yuck!

Build time!!! anyone who has waited for a permit knows this joy!! above are the new bathroom walls...we added about 2' in width and moved the door back about 18"..which turned the bathroom from a rediculouly small size to a functional size...
Seriously...did my husband need to take a picture of his saw....really....boys....(eye roll)
Building a new bulkhead (so both sides of the kitchen match) the other bulkhead houses the plumbing to the bath above and could not be moved. Wall is chewed up to run electrical to new sub panel....have you heard about the $2k dishwasher install??? Yuck!!

Getting the other side of the kitchen ready....

New wall in the bedroom...we changed the 3 small bedrooms into 2 big ones, much more functional!!

A Condo Update (or are we there yet??)

Well I feel like we were in hurry up and wait mode...but we have a permit now so it is off to the races!!! Walls have started a coming down and things are looking a whole lot bigger and brighter...
Living/dining room...as open as they will be getting..there are still 2 small walls in the kitchen to come down which will open that room up to the dining room.

From dining to living...CD is very proud of his saw. Have you noticed the bike boxes? Perfect for containing and discarding reno debris. Victoria is a very enviromental town, all debris is being recycled, which is really great.

when one must leave a very hectic job to work on a construction site for 2 hours one deserves a treat no? Very tasty if you are a beer connoisseur..I highly recommend it.

My color palette and samples...precariously balanced on garbage...love the dark wool carpet I scoped for $1.99 per sq ft!!!! I decided to have the blue darkened to a blue/grey color..this will be used for the paneled feature walls, stair railing and old dresser which will become the bathroom vanity.

When I say CD has a wee case of OCD I mean it!! Have you ever seen such a tidy stack of drywall??? notice my nicely primed doors behind...

Okay lets be honest...the best part of our jobs is the pretty....but the management of a million things, the problem solving...well, to be really good at what we do, that part is a necessity.

I have been up to my ears in that part for the last week and I am done!!! (actually not done but I am taking 20mins off!)

I want pretty.....

so...

random google image search for interior design and you won't believe what i stumbled upon...the condos kitchen...okay not really...but really close to how I envision the finished space...with out the open concept (still stings a little)

Pretty eh??? (yes I am a canuck....)

and these stairs inspired a whole new idea for the condo stairs...which will save a ton of money and look piles better!!!! Very excited!!!

A new found love of Plan B

Hi All....well I have mourned the demise of Plan A enough...big help to those who approved of the Dishwasher over open kitchen...here are the new plans..with elevations...

Plan View
(forgive the sketch..as this is my own project I am just doing quick drawings...plus they have a human quality i really like no?)

Large eating bar to replace the island..which I like. I decided to replace where the range was with 2 x 24w x 12d glass fronted high cabinets for pantry/misc storage. We will be blocking behind the cabinets to create an 18" deep desk on the right.

Elevations...
The range wall is flipped....

I hate upper cabinets so the little 15" high ones make a great compromise. I will also be adding floating shelves at 18" from the counter top..glass tile below...my splurge..some things I cannot compromise on!

So far this flipping ( I'm will say re-development from now on...sounds much less shady) project has been a challenge. The worst is trying to balance wanting to do my best as a designer with the realities of what I am doing. I am consoling myself with the fact that this will be an amazing condo for the price point regardless....

Off to Ikea on Sunday to order the kitchen...will post again then...as always LOVE your comments!!!

An untimley end to plan "a"

Had a great weekend of demo so far my favorite part of this whole thing is spending so much time with CD..we defiantly had a fun ripping things!

Our meeting with the engineer went great..except for one minor change and I was ready to head to the city for a permit with my drawings and a big fat $470.00 engineer's stamp...

and then....

did a walk through with the electrician tonight...and I knew plan "a" was going to be pricey..come on.. in my real world I get to make the best plan (which as we all know is not always the cheapest) but in house flipping world it is...

OUT WITH PLAN "A"!

Yes if you must know my head does hurt from the swift shake...but I am better now.

Here are the plan "A" drawings....sorry about the quality..did not know they would look this bad until I got home and I wanted to keep you informed

kitchen is tucked into the little square in the top left corner,dining on right, living at bottom

Plan "a" kitchen, with a big fat beautiful island, we needed 2 posts, where I was hoping for only 1. I would have redrawn with a smaller table...but now these are garbage anyway...

(I will post 2nd floor drawings another time...that way the image will be better quality)

You see, we want to add a Dishwasher, which needs it's own breaker, which means (in plan "a") we need to add a new panel, which would need to move from it's current location, which means we need to rewire the whole condo....

THAT IS ONE PRICEY DISHWASHER!

So now I will be starting plan "B"..which will be much cheaper...range does not move (saving a whole lot there).....and will plan to work in an eating bar for the island feel. We are still hoping to work in a dishwasher, and the new plan will allow us to hide a sub panel in the storage room. CD is researching dishwasher drawers as we are hoping a single drawer will be okay on a circuit with other stuff...thus no panel change at all...fingers crossed!

So on to the drawings.....wish me luck!!!

Day 1 -Demo,Dust and a great start!

Demo day!!
Who doesn't love a little demo??
Unfortunately the condo rules restrict power tools on Sunday, hand tools only! Our goal for today was to expose the framing in all the walls we wanted to remove. We needed to have everything ready for the structural engineer tomorrow.

CD removing drywall...good news!, the portion of wall on the right was an addition (corner bead right beside the thermostat from original wall) Can rip out this wall no problem!!!

Really, really wish that post was more to the left...thinking of removing the wall to the left anyway (post has to stay) and creating a interesting architectural detail to fill the void between post and wall.

more investigating...2x3 walls....

Flipping a Condo! (Gulp!)

I know I have been absent for a while and now I get to reveal why (or have the time and energy to blog?) After much discussion CD and I have decided to take on a flip project, okay, I will admit I am a bit jealous every time I watch Sara's House...I want that type of creative freedom to!! I am guessing many of us in the design world have thought of this too..so I am doing it, and you can follow along with all my trials and tribulations!!

Cross your fingers this works out for us as we are hoping to do a couple a year, eventually making it CD's full time job....for now we will be working at our real jobs full time and reno-ing on the weekend/evening with minimal outside help. Any favorite coffee brands? I'm gonna need it!!!

We decided to test the waters on our first project with a condo, reduced sq footage, no exterior concerns, lower purchase price, all combine to take some stress off the project. The hunt for the perfect property took 2 months. We lost a great project in competing bids :( only to find another great project blocks from our house :)

Here is the scoop (and the before pic's)

Currently a 3 (SMALL) bedroom 1 bath 2-STOREY!!!! Condo. about 1000 sf in horrid condition. The great news is that 2 storey condos are almost unheard of! I know this will give us a huge leg up on the market when it is time to sell, which is why we worked so hard (competing offers again!) to get this project.

I do believe stick on floor tiles as a wall border are the height of fashion no?
Who else agrees this light could be nice in the right place?

So, we are off to the races...demo starts tomorrow..hopefully more pics and before and after floor plans will be posted on Sunday/Monday, I'll let you know how things go with the struc. engineer, tile orders, plumbing orders, electrician's and lighting plans, ordering an Ikea kitchen from an island...oh my!!!

A Rainy Day Post

Erin ( a Bespoke Staffer) and I are playing with color..it is a rainy and slow day here in Victoria, To occupy ourselves we started discussing our fav F&B colors, we agreed on Pelt, a moody and rich purple (obviouly inspired by the dreary outdoors)....which lead us to the discussion of the perfect paint color for the ceiling of our Pelt room...Erin suggested Great White and she was bang on. Neither of us is really drawn to Great White, I have always found it a little cold, but with Pelt is is the perfect slightly purple,warm interesting color. OK ceiling sorted...now trim, in out imaginary room we choose Elephants Breath,not because it is our current fav!, but because we loved how the grey tones countered the strong purple...then of course we had to pick the perfect bedding..oh, did we forget to tell you it is a bedroom...in Paris...hey it's our imagination!

I want a matching swimsuit!

If you know me you know I love a little old lady print...If you follow me on Twitter you know I love color (my current homepage is Tangerine and Fushia) so through those two together with a large scale stripe...yes, i say...yes....

You may or may not know that I am pleasantly trapped on an island, and on the long list of islands in this world I would like to think mine ranks in the top ten, sadly though we just don't have access to some of the worlds beautiful things.....or Ikea :)

To make me feel better,this line of fabrics was also obscure when I lived in Calgary...yep that helps. I came to know this line while working in a little bedding and fabric shop, we had a couple of their patterns,supplied to us under a different brand name, however the salvage proudly displayed the name of the manufacture, Prestigious Textiles. A name I have come to know for fantastic patterns, stunning colors and the ideal base cloth for wash and wear home decor.

So imagine my pleasure when one of my sales reps walked in the door with 3 of their fabric books,again under a different name, "from a company I would never know" how incorrect he was, I recognized them as prestigious immediately!

"Style and innovation combine in everything that Prestigious Textiles does" and it is true. They embrace scale in a way few other fabric companies do, with patterns that are at once dramatic and yet restful. The combination of colors is always complicated and spot on.

New Ravenna Tile

I had the extreme pleasure so years ago to be a guest of New Ravenna's at their annual dealer meeting...and how amazing it was. I have loved mosaic tile since my days of studying basilica's in Uni.New Ravenna does the most beautiful traditional mosaic ( which I promise to explore at a later date) but today I am being called by these sunning mod/trad monochrome beauties

is there any other words...these 2 patterns are stunning in their own right. Tatami is one of my #1 favorite pattern...especially in glass. I love the idea of a splashy pattern,but most who know me know I go for simple/subtle interest which tatami has in spades.

Two themes I have often noticed in SA design is a dark floor, I have once seen a high gloss black floor..imagine!!! Also SA designers seem to have no fear of scale, look at the frames leaves completely wall to wall..so fantastic! I have a South African fabric which has the most amazing tomatoes on a white field...we are talking 2' diameter tomatoes!!

I love finding beauty in the everyday! Waiting for the ferry off Salt Spring, I was able to focus my attention on these common items which reveal amazing beauty when studied in detail.

A corroded Nut and Washer. Such a titanic version of oxidization, amazing tecture and beauty in detail no?
I would not normally call a barnacle cute but I think these guys are adorable.I think this photo in particular would be fantastic blown up to a huge scale...the juxtaposition of subject matter and size would be so interesting.

Patio and Exterior of Cafe Talia

I absolutely fell in love with this little cottage cafe on Salt Spring Island during my holiday. I am sure we all know by now I have an unhealthy love for anything with patina and this little jem is just weathered to perfection.
Yippie it's open!

The Cafe was closed the first 2 days of my holiday, but we diligently returned on the 3 day, and killed an hour waiting for it to open at 9am. It turned out many others were doing the same as the cafe was filled to the brim as soon as it opened!

No pasteries for you!! You have had 2 much cheese this week...

The interior was a perfect blend of seaside with a clean,modern approach. C and I loved the exposed beams. I must admit I was mentally renovating the sweet cafe into my own cottage haven while enjoying my Misto. The kitchen area of the cafe is lit with seaside inspired sconces..so sweet.

How much do you love this drift would shelf? the aged brackets are so perfect, and the garden bench employed as the cream/sugar station...LOVE

Must admit I wish I was enjoying the pleasant surroundings of Cafe Talia this a.m. but off to work today...I love being a shop owner...right??

Some of the newest pieces from Restoration Hardware, which are undeniably beautiful. But a question?? Does the mass production of such an item reduce it's intrinsic beauty? i.e. the beauty in the story one could have told when owning such a piece? Somehow "I ran down to the local shopping mall" just does not cut it for me.

Surrounded by Pretty Things II

Many moons ago I posted my first ever blog...lost for a topic I thought I would discuss my love of beautiful things used in every application. I must admit I don't differ to function in my everyday life. If something which I find beautiful is slightly more cumbersome to use....so be it!

Much better to find pleasure in the use of something, through its form or what it adds to one's environment that to simply fill our home with utilitarian things. After all I would rather be in Superior cafe than McDonald's...even though McDonald's will fill me up and be faster.

For me the beauty of the experience is a function in and of itself.

Holy Blah blah blah!!! on to the pictures we say!

So one of the things I can't help but love is Soup Tureens. {@allthebestblog - You love them too don't you? How many must you own???} I think is is the bulbous shape, and the details of the 2 I own echo architectural moldings..which I also love more than one should! So here is to using something beautiful in one's ever day life...simply to enjoy the pleasure of it!!

This little darling was picked up at my neighbors garage sale..it belonged to her mother and her kids did not want it :( I love the ribbed detailing it is tre petite, and perfect to store napkins on my kitchen table.

The are so cute in there..plus they are tucked away out of site ( though I do love Ikea and their patterned napkins!) It is quite funny to see guests hunting around for napkins, they never suspect the decor! I take pleasure every day in lifting the lid, such an elegant gesture, to whip out my pretty paper napkin....My second Tureen, my favorite and purchased at a rummage sale for $1, yep $1, the lady beside me could not believe I would by it as the handle had been broken and repaired...ummm..$1.

I absolutely love the shape, Simple,Strong and Elegant form...the perfect combo and every day I get to enjoy it filled with my deliriously happy Antherium!

Who else thinks this stack of magazines is to high??? seriously..there are about 4 other stacks in my living room...want some??

A theme that has come up twice in my world this week, once in Twitterland and the other while explaining to a client why a 100 year old dining table was so perfect for them,verses a "distressed reproduction". Authenticity is something that simply cannot be recreated, the patina some items have earned is a beauty all it's own.

Take a look at this hand scrapped floor..yes it is quite nice when compared to a new sand on site floor if you like the look...

But how could it ever be compared to a floor created from the beams of old barn...just looking at this has me creating stories in my mind of this floor history....imagine!

My fabric reps will roll their eyes but something I simply cannot abide by is faux silkNothing can reproduce the sheen and body of true silk...it whispers elegance and beauty in a way no other can...

and what bathroom today is complete without a furniture style vanity? Stunning I know and have done them myself...always quite happily...

But now I know this amazing piece exists...only authentic antique marble has that amazing grain...so incredible...LOVE....
And finally one must discuss authenticity in our own homes ( or that of our clients) I am sure many of us cringe when we see a suburban show home..completely devoid of character and personality

I thought I would share some pictures from my most authentic client's home, which is not quite done so there are only a few pictures. This client embodies the concept of making a house one's own. Not only are the flooring...lightfixtures...artwork...fabrics..etc...are their authentic selves...with all there flaws and patina on display...but this home is wholly and completely "Kari"

Which is really what makes it so beautiful!

Purple, Design's Little Black Sheep

This Grey/Lavender/Lilac colors has been popping up quite a lot lately, I think it is the feminine answer to the Grey palette that has taken over here on the west coast.

I love that even in a room that is truly quite modern and clean, this shade paired with a few glamorous touches feels decidedly girly, though I would describe this room more as the starlet du jour than "girly"...To top it all off we have been having a run on Farrow & Balls Elephants Breath at the shop lately. Now I must admit I am dreaming of painting my own Bedroom this color!!!

Had a lovely 3 days off from the Shop...which is to say I took some paperwork home and relaxed while working:) I am lucky enough to have the worlds best business partner..which makes getting a little time off A LOT easier. So how happy was I when I came back and found he had reworked the whole shop??!!!
I LOVE this display on the Churlish Wall ( Farrow & Ball Paint) The floating shelf has been hanging around the storage room forever! So happy to see it looking stylish.
Love,Love,Love this sofa..feather filled leather, a dream...I desperately want it for my media room. The combination of soft yellow with the oranges is the perfect summer into fall transition don't you think?

Pretty,Pretty Bed.....soft grey and white damask...I love the way he paired it with the the shot silk pillows..

Martha's Paper PomPom..How can I use these?!?

I had to stop into Micheal's today to pick up some canvases for the shop's next widow display and could not resist my favorite isle...Martha Stewart's craft section. Please don't be confused..I am not a Crafter...no patience..and I lose things...so a hobby involving lots of little things?

Not so good

But this stuff is just so pretty....I am dying to find some way to use anything from this isle! My number one favorite thing that I simply MUST use is the paper Pom Pomswww.MarthaStewartCrafts.com

How I Love Encaustic Tile

Travelling the land of Google Images and Dreaming of a bathroom reno ( for my self this time!) I was pleasantly reminded of my love of Encaustic Tiles

This is Foliage corner tile from the Foliage Border used as a field tile.

I really love the puzzle nature of these tiles, viewed as individuals they are quite simple.

However, when they are grouped together, the interlocking geometric pattern of these tile becomes the dominate feature. Another incredible feature of these tiles is the depth and matteness of the colors.

In my aforementioned google journey, Villa Lagoon Tile one of the company's which kept surfacing with images of these stunning tiles.

Villa Lagoon Tile was founded by Lundy Wilder while searching for tile appropriate for the hurricane prone Gulf Coast. Wilder discovered the best tile for her needs was the same tile that she had seen in her travels called encaustic cement tile. When she found they were not readily available in the States she began a company to manufacture them.

Encaustic Cement Tiles aremade from a combination Marble,Portland cement and natural earth pigments. The tiles are made in three layers which are pressed together with a mechanical press which compresses the layers together. After the press the tiles are soaked in water, which activates the cement and makes the tiles solid...and heavy at about 7 lbs each!Each tile is individually made and the inherent characteristics of such add to the beauty of these tiles

Just one example of the many tiles on this site, these tiles were reclaimed from a kitchen in a village in Saone et Loire in Burgundy, close to Macon. These original tiles date to 1890. I absolutely love the Chartreuse in these tiles. I am sure the patina would be amazing! This company also has a storage facility in Canada...so good new if the freight cost is feeling a little daunting

All in all a classic and unexpected way to incorporate art, texture and color into any space...I am seriously considering these tiles for my upcoming bathroom reno, though I will likely select something subtle in style,as is my personal design aesthetic

Surrounded by Pretty Things Part 1

St. Patrick's day was my 10 year anniversary. Big gifts aren't really our thing but I did get something really fantastic!!! Which got me to thinking about all the pretty things I surround myself with. I guess I believe there is really no point in having something in your home/life that is not beautiful. I also believe the term beautiful can be applied to touch and smell...not only sight. given that philosophy here are some of my pretty things, starting with the aforementioned anniversary gift.

It came with the Lily's...lucky me. I love this water jug, it is enamelware intended for camping! I think the form is fantastic, and the color is one of my current top three favorites( lime green, turquoise and orange). I think it is especially pretty as an informal vase and imagine it will play that role for some time...after that maybe holding the bath salts? Much to pretty to hide in the fridge or cupboard.

Another favorite of my beautiful things is my vintage teapot. I love the shape...a little Gennie like and anything with paisley is an instant favorite. One may think I use this as my regular teapot but I actually use it to water my plants! It does not drip water everywhere, is easy to get under the leaves, and holds the perfect amount of water. Plus I get to enjoy my favorite teapot while watering...which makes it less of a chore...really.

I have a long list of everyday beautiful items and will be adding more in the next couple of days...
